Yesterday, we woke up, had breakfast, and then we were off to Putu's car. We were off to Putu's village for the Gulangan festival. Gulangan is a Hindu holiday. Putu's house was really nice. It wasn't huge, but it definitely wasn't small. We had to get all dressed up like Balinese people for the festival. I didn't feel dressed up at all because the shirt that I was supposed to wear didn't fit. I felt like all of the kids were staring at us and laughing. One time a kid looked at us and said something but her mom shut her up. It felt a little weird walking in the parade, but I felt a little more comfortable when Putu's mom came out and helped us a little (finally, we see someone who speaks English). When the festival was over, Putu took us to his family compound. The family compound is the place where a family has a bunch of rooms for the whole family (whole family as in uncles, aunts, grandparents, ect). There is also a place for the family to eat and the family temple. Putu's uncle climbed up a coconut tree and grabbed us a bunch of coconuts. We ended up spilling coconut water all over ourselves, so Putu got us a few cups, and we cheated. When we finished the coconut water, Putu and his uncle cut open a few coconuts, and we ate the meat. When we finished the coconuts, we checked out his family temple. It looked like a small version of the first water temple that we saw, only without any water. Then, we went back to the hotel. I had a great day. |
